Manhattan Cardiology’s own Dr. George Welch<\/a> was recently interviewed in New York Daily News (nydailynews.com)<\/a>\u00a0to speak about the recent passing of Tom Petty<\/a>\u00a0by sudden cardiac arrest<\/a>. Dr. Welch is quoted as saying:<\/p>\n

\u201cCardiac arrest occurs when your heart abruptly stops beating due to a malfunction in the body\u2019s electrical system,\u201d says George Welch, M.D., a cardiologist with\u00a0Manhattan Cardiology.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen the heart abruptly stops functioning you lose consciousness very quickly because blood is no longer pumped through the body,\u201d Welch tells the Daily News. \u201cWith no blood flow to the brain, you collapse.\u201d<\/p>\n

The condition is different from a heart attack, which is caused by a blockage that stops blood flow to the heart. A heart attack \u2014 or myocardial infarction \u2014 refers to the \u201cdeath of heart muscle tissue due to the loss of blood supply, which is irreversible,\u201d says Welch. But it doesn\u2019t necessarily result in the death of the heart attack victim.<\/p>\n
