A recent, small randomized double-blind crossover study published in Free Radical Biology and Medicine found that older persons who drank beetroot juice had reduced blood pressure. We know what you’re thinking: That seems like a lot. There has to be a catch, right? And there is, but still—the results are noteworthy and, more importantly, they indicate hope for better heart health and blood pressure treatments in the future.
Dr. Padma Shenoy, a cardiologist from Manhattan Cardiology, went over the results and what you should take away from them. Researchers came to the conclusion that drinking beetroot juice may help lower blood pressure in older individuals after comparing the results of the three experiments. Dr. Shenoy says this is “likely by changing the composition of bacteria in the mouth.” She goes on to say, “Younger people did not see this effect on blood pressure.” Read the article.
