Can You Swim With a Pacemaker?

If you have a pacemaker, it’s usually safe to swim, whether you’ve been swimming your whole life or simply want to start a new workout program. But there are several things you should think about, especially if you just got your pacemaker put in.

Based on what that activity is, you should be able to start moving around again a few days after obtaining an implant. But swimming is a different issue, so you may have to wait, depending on your device. There are two main types of pacemakers: those that don’t have leads and those that do. A pacemaker without leads is connected to the inside wall of your heart and doesn’t have a separate battery or wires (leads). Transvenous pacemakers are usually bigger and have one to three lines that connect to your heart’s chambers.

It’s smart to know how and when you can increase your physical activity, and it’s safe to get back in the pool. According to Dr. Randy Gould, a cardiologist at Manhattan Cardiology, your doctor may tell you not to do specific things for up to three months, depending on how well you are recovering.
