A recent Grey’s Anatomy storyline has brought attention to peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM), a rare but serious form of heart failure that can develop around the time of pregnancy or delivery. The condition can be difficult to recognize because its symptoms, like shortness of breath, fatigue, swelling, and palpitations, often overlap with normal late-pregnancy changes. However, experts stress that symptoms that feel severe, rapidly worsening, or out of proportion to what’s typical should always be evaluated.
According to Dr. Randy Gould, PPCM occurs when the heart chambers enlarge and the heart muscle weakens, reducing the heart’s ability to pump blood effectively. He notes that while many patients recover, especially with early diagnosis and treatment, the condition can become life-threatening if it progresses undetected, making timely awareness and advocacy especially important during pregnancy.
