Is winter weather bad for our hearts?

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in America. Every 34 seconds, someone in the United States has a heart attack, and every 60 seconds, someone dies from heart disease.

For those living in colder regions, winter weather can pose a serious threat to heart health. Cold temperatures can cause narrowing of the blood vessels and arteries, which restricts the flow of blood to the heart, thus reducing the amount of oxygen to the organ. As a result, blood pressure increases and creates a higher risk for heart attack or stroke.

How can you keep your heart healthy this winter?

– – Dress warmly.
– – Avoid over exertion and strenuous outdoor activities.
– – Avoid drinking alcohol before staying outdoors for a prolonged period
