$2.1 billion dollars is the amount spent on Halloween candy this year, as estimated by the National Retail Federation. The understated costs of all of this sugar is far greater: diabetes and heart disease are linked to sugar intake.

Fortunately, many shoppers have been shifting to “healthier candy,” which unlike its standard counterparts, has reduced sugar and added fruits or nuts for a health kick.

New candies are being offered containing xylitol (a sugar found in birch trees and corn cobs) which is thought to be safer for diabetics and contains lower calories.
