Lowering body temperature can protect the body during a heart attack.
Therapeutic hypothermia protects the body when there is an insufficient blood flow in the case of cardiac arrest, blood clot or stroke. It may also help those whose heart does not respond to defibrillation because there is no pulse or electrical activity in the heart.
According to a study of 519 cardiac arrest patients, those who received therapeutic hypothermia were 2.8 times more likely to survive and 3.5 times more likely to have improved neurologic recovery compared to those who did not get the treatment; the patients of this study had non-shockable rhythms.
While more research is in progress, this treatment may prove beneficial in hospitals. For more information, read the complete article.
