What is a statin?

A statin is a drug that reduces the amount of cholesterol in your blood. Your system will experience a reduction in cholesterol as a result of the medication’s ability to inhibit something that is necessary. As the level of cholesterol is high, plaques may build up and raise the risk of heart diseases, heart attacks, and strokes. Most patients who require statins are those suffering from high cholesterol, people who have already encountered some heart-related problem, or other similar conditions entailing risk factors such as diabetes and high blood pressure.

Why you might need a statin

Statin is one of the best ways to bring your LDL cholesterol numbers down and, in turn, lower your risk for heart problems, especially if you have high cholesterol. That’s because statins help cut down on the cholesterol that piles up in your artery walls, thereby preventing blockages that could cause heart attacks or strokes.

Benefits of statins

  • When taken regularly, statins lower LDL cholesterol, which lowers the risk of cardiovascular disease.
  • Blood clots may result when plaque in your arteries ruptures; satins help keep this from happening.
  • Statins also reduce vascular inflammation as an added protection against cardiovascular events.

Risks and side effects

Commonly, statins are well-tolerated; however, some patients may show the following side effects:

  • Muscle pain/weakness: This is one of the more common adverse effects but usually improves with titer adjustment.
  • Liver Damage: This is a very rare problem with statins, for which your liver enzymes will be monitored with blood tests.
  • Higher Blood Sugar: The use of statins might raise your blood sugar level, which could pose a problem if you have diabetes.

Statins are super important for people with high cholesterol who are trying to avoid heart disease. If you have any concerns or side effects from statins, it is a good idea to discuss with your doctor further about the possibility of adjusting a dosage or changing your medications.
