“Unfortunately many patients do not make it to the hospital alive,” says Amnon Beniaminovitz, MD, cardiologist at Manhattan Cardiology in New York City, adding that the type of heart attack Smith suffered is known as a “widow-maker” because prior to modern cardiology the odds of surviving such a heart attack were low.
“If blood supply is restored in a timely fashion, a scar replaces the once-beating heart muscle and the heart is often irreversibly damaged,” Dr. Beniaminovitz says.
