It could be atrial fibrillation, or it could just be stress.

You might start to sweat. You feel sick to your stomach and your heart starts to race. Being stressed can have many different effects on your body. But these signs could also mean that something a lot worse is going on. One heart problem that can induce heart palpitations or flutters is called atrial fibrillation.

“Stress can cause many physical symptoms, including lightheadedness, dizziness, shortness of breath, chest pain, and palpitations,” says Dr. Karishma Patwa, a cardiologist at Manhattan Cardiology and a contributor to LabFinder. “Stress can trigger these symptoms. Regrettably, cardiovascular illnesses can also trigger all these symptoms.”

As defined by the American Heart Association, atrial fibrillation, often known as AFib, is a condition that is characterized by an irregular heartbeat, also known as arrhythmia.
