Adding This One Berry to Your Breakfast Slashes LDL Cholesterol

This is a super simple and delicious way to help your heart health out. At this point, you likely have a good grasp of what a heart-healthy diet looks like: think lots of veggies, a good amount of fruit, some whole grains, healthy fats, and a little lean meat or fish. Plus, it’s best to keep processed foods to a minimum and watch out for trans fats, cholesterol, and sodium.

So, here’s the thing: all fruit is generally good for you (unless, of course, you have allergies to any of them!). But when it comes to nutrition, not all fruits stack up the same way. There’s this one berry that cardiologists absolutely love because it helps lower LDL cholesterol. It’s blueberries! Blueberries seem to be great for balancing the good HDL cholesterol with the bad LDL cholesterol. It’s really exciting to see the research on blueberries and LDL cholesterol! Some really good studies have found that eating blueberries regularly can help lower LDL cholesterol levels by about 5% to 15%, especially when they’re part of a balanced diet. “Consistent intake of blueberries usually helps the body’s lipid profile—especially when combined with a diet low in refined sweets and saturated fats,” says Dr. Robert Segal, MD, cardiologist and founder of Manhattan Cardiology.
