If cardiomyopathy has been diagnosed in you or someone you care about, you may hear it more often referred to as heart disease. Myopathy is a dysfunction of the muscle that contracts and relaxes the heart, and cardiomyopathy is the medical term for this condition. It goes beyond that, however. Hypertrophic and dilated cardiomyopathy are the two most prevalent forms. They have certain commonalities in terms of possible origins and effects on cardiac function, but their symptoms and approaches to therapy couldn’t be more different.
