New research suggests that exercise intensity may play an important role in reducing the risk of chronic disease. While any movement is beneficial, researchers found that incorporating short bursts of vigorous activity into your routine may offer additional health benefits, including a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and dementia.
According to Dr. Padma Shenoy, a cardiologist with Manhattan Cardiology, “Vigorous activity is anything where you can’t speak a full sentence.” Dr. Shenoy notes that activities such as running, swimming laps, biking, or strenuous exercise classes can qualify, and even brief bursts of effort, like climbing stairs or running to catch a bus, may contribute to better long-term health.
