How to Spot a Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA)

Every 40 seconds, on average, someone in the U.S. has a stroke, making them as common as they are risky. Strokes not only cause a lot of long-term disabilities, but they are also the main cause of more than 5% of deaths in the US every year. If you know the early signs of a stroke and act quickly, you could save your own life.

Different things can cause a stroke, but the most common reason is that blood can’t get to a part of the brain. An ischemic stroke describes this condition. Ischemic attacks may also occur in the form of transient ischemic attacks (TIAs), commonly known as mini-strokes, since they persist for just a few minutes until blood flow is restored. However, this does not make them any less dangerous than a stroke. Dr. Karishma Patwa, a cardiologist at Manhattan Cardiology, discusses why mini-strokes should be treated as serious medical emergencies. Read the article.
