Young Adults With High Blood Pressure Face Higher Risk of Heart, Kidney Disease

High blood pressure in young adulthood may significantly increase the risk of developing heart and kidney disease later in life, underscoring the importance of early screening and long-term management rather than waiting until middle age for intervention. While hypertension is often under-recognized in younger adults, emerging research suggests that even modest elevations sustained over time can meaningfully impact cardiovascular and renal outcomes.

According to Dr. Karishma Patwa, a cardiologist with Manhattan Cardiology, “Often we ignore elevated blood pressures in young adults, thinking that we’ll just watch it.” Dr. Patwa emphasizes that this approach can delay critical prevention, noting that screening and management should begin much earlier than traditionally assumed, with individualized assessment of lifetime risk guiding treatment decisions.
